a minor silver lining: over time, you can make a meaningful difference with a relatively small investment of time and money. [bridgy](https://brid.gy/), for example, costs just $1-2/day ($30-60/mo) to run. it [definitely took work to build](https://github.com/snarfed/bridgy/graphs/contributors), but spread out over time, so we were still able to hold down day jobs, have some work/life/project balance, build relationships, even raise kids. if you’ve already built something, and you just keep it in maintenance mode, that takes even less time, and often less money too.

of course, this in no way addresses the core question of how to build a principled, respectful, open source business that actually works as a business and sustains itself. i have no idea about that. :P this is just a small silver lining.
