The success of services like Linktree are a damning indictment of open source publishing platforms. Companies and social media influencers with hundreds of thousands of followers would rather serve up 1995-style HTML pages with links than build a basic WordPress site.

There’s a ton of difference, for sure but IMHO it’s mostly that we integrate information across many contexts. I still experience this feeling of being sentient even when I know I’m just pattern matching. I’d guess there are moments the machine experiences that too.

Yes, but you also sometimes mind*fully* generate words. I’m with you in general! I’m no dualist. And there are easy dunks to be had here. But there’s still a meaningful difference between us and current foundational models, even if we can’t quite articulate it yet, right?
