chess with my dad. i managed to capitalize on a p-q4 opening to win a bit of material (rook for a bishop) and decent board position, but we’re at a major impasse now. any suggestions? At Eden Canyon Rd, Castro Valley, California.

reposition that knight more centrally to put pressure on the backwards d pawn?
yup, definitely a good idea. it’d take a number of moves, and i’d have to fight through his knight – and might not make it out the other side alive – but i didn’t see anything better.
instead, we pushed pawns on the right side, danced around the black bishops and my rooks, and ended up more calcified than ever with no resolution. we called it a draw, even with my material advantage, and went back to exploring the white p-q4 opening. it’s solid (for white) in general, and devastating if black responds with p-q4 and white offers the p-qb4 gambit. i’m sure we’re missing something, though. time to read up on the p-q4 opening!
With your knight out of position and his bishop pair I’m not sure your material advantage is worth all that much.
