I think CBOR (and maybe CAR?) should be added to serialization for ATProto?
Going old school, what about adding RSS/ATOM feed protocol as well.
( Still Missing NNTP/USENET )
good point, thanks!
Nice, useful table. Something about how open the protocols are, availability of reference implementations, single vs multivendor support, open vs closed source etc.
Thanks! And good ideas! Hopefully the governance row speaks to “how open,” and otherwise they’re all similar on many of those fronts – all open source, all have multiple implementations – but you’re right that only some have corporate backers or reference implementations.
@snarfed.org ActivityPub is push + pull. Every AP server also works as a client, for example when it discovers
activity.actor
orobject.inReplyTo
. Pulling collections is less common, but even Mastodon does that occasionallyTrue! AP delivery is push, itβs the primary way content travels, but itβs definitely not the only way. This format is heavily oversimplified, makes it hard to capture nuance like that, but youβre absolutely right.
@snarfed.org , great summary! Love your work and the retro vibes
